WE tv's Wedding Cake Wars

Ruth's team took on 11 teams....and WON!!

WE tv, home of Bridezilla's and Amazing Wedding Cakes shows, brings us a Special Event, Wedding Cake Wars. Ruth and her partner, Janet Rosebeary of Guthrie, took on 11 teams from across the country to see who would win the first challenge of its kind. Each team found out on Wednesday morning what the theme for the wedding challenge would be - Location. At that point, each team had 3 days to design a cake, bake it, make any pieces that required drying time, figure out how to make something on the cake MOVE and to be on location in Maryland. Yes, Maryland.

For Ruth, that meant that at 10 am on Wednesday, she started brainstorming for all she was worth. Once she had an idea and a workable sketch, Ruth started baking. Once the cake was out, she started making flowers and pulling together all the supplies she needed for the cake. Ruth's sweet husband ran to Lowe's to get the strong board she was going to need. Ruth worked all night long on making everything and packing. On one hour sleep, she headed out with Janet for Maryland. This meant that their 3 day prep time turned into only ONE DAY for Ruth!! 22 hours later, Ruth and Janet arrived in Maryland.

On Day 1, they had 2 hours to split and fill their cakes and to ice them. If they finished early, they were able to start working on pieces that would go on the cake...but they could not do any decorations to the side of the cake. On Day 2, they had only 5 hours to create a wedding cake to fit the theme they selected for Location. Ruth chose an African Safari Honeymoon theme. Ruth walked in with a notebook full of research to support every single item that would go on the cake (we all knew the law degree and English major would help someday - who knew it would be for cake research!).

The competitors ranged from people who had been decorating for only a couple of months to The Cake Diva, Charmaine, who has been decorating for over 30 years. Ruth fell right in the middle with about 15 years of creating and designing cakes.

If you watched the show, you know that they focused primarily on 3 competitors (we knew this ahead of time). We thought that we would all be introduced and that you would get to see a picture of everyone's completed piece, but the editing of the show went by pretty quickly, so you may have missed some. So, Ruth wants to share with you some of her pictures from that day. You can view detailed photos of Ruth's African Safari cake as well as many other shots of the challenge here.
